Privacy Policy
Effective date: June 28, 2026
In short: Stip stores your notes on your device. If you use iCloud sync, your notes are stored in your private iCloud account through Apple CloudKit. We do not run our own servers for your note content, we do not sell your data, and we do not use analytics or advertising trackers in the app.
This Privacy Policy describes how Stip ("the app," "we," or "us") handles information when you use Stip on macOS and iOS. By using the app, you agree to this policy.
Who we are
Stip is a scratchpad note-taking app. For privacy questions, contact us at .
Information the app stores
Stip is built to hold temporary text notes. Depending on how you use the app, the following information may be stored:
- Note content. The text you type in each Stip, including formatting such as bold, italic, and list markers.
- Stip settings. Titles, colors, sort order, and page background choices for each Stip.
- Editor preferences. Settings such as text size and font choices.
- Sync metadata. Timestamps and similar data used to keep devices in sync and resolve conflicts.
This information is content you create in the app. Stip does not require a separate Stip account.
Where your data is stored
On your device
Stip saves your Stips locally on your Mac or iPhone so they remain available after you quit the app or restart your device.
In iCloud (optional)
If you are signed in to iCloud and iCloud sync is available, Stip can sync your Stips through Apple CloudKit to your private iCloud database (container: iCloud.com.stipnl.mac).
- Synced data is tied to your Apple ID and protected by Apple's iCloud security.
- We do not operate a separate backend that receives your note content.
- If iCloud is unavailable or you are not signed in, the app continues to work locally on that device.
Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by Apple's privacy policy and terms. We encourage you to review Apple's documentation for iCloud and CloudKit.
Push notifications
Stip may use Apple's push notification service to receive silent background updates from CloudKit so your Stips can stay in sync across devices. These notifications are used for sync, not for marketing.
Exporting files
On macOS, you can export selected text to a file you choose. Stip only accesses files and folders you explicitly select through the system file picker.
What we do not collect
Stip does not include third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, or cross-app tracking. We do not:
- Sell your personal information
- Use your notes for advertising
- Track you across other companies' apps or websites
- Collect contact lists, photos, location, or health data
How we use information
We use the information described above only to provide the app and its features, including:
- Displaying and editing your Stips
- Saving notes on your device
- Syncing notes through iCloud when enabled
- Remembering your editor preferences
Sharing with third parties
We do not share your note content with third parties for marketing or analytics.
When you use iCloud sync, Apple processes and stores your synced data as part of the iCloud service you already use with your Apple ID. That processing is between you and Apple under Apple's terms.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users and the app.
Data retention and deletion
- Delete a Stip: Removing a Stip in the app deletes that note from the local store and, when iCloud sync is active, from your synced data.
- Delete the app: Uninstalling Stip removes local app data from that device. Data already synced to iCloud may remain in your iCloud account until you remove it there.
- Turn off iCloud: You can sign out of iCloud or disable iCloud for the app in system settings. The app can continue to store notes locally only.
Your choices
You control what you write in Stip and whether you use iCloud sync. You can delete individual Stips at any time. You can also manage iCloud and notification permissions in macOS System Settings or iOS Settings.
Children's privacy
Stip is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, contact us and we will help address the request.
Security
Stip runs in Apple's app sandbox on macOS and uses platform security features on iOS. iCloud data is protected by Apple's security measures for CloudKit. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we design the app to keep your notes on your devices and in your iCloud account rather than on our own servers.
International users
If you use iCloud, your synced data may be processed by Apple in accordance with your Apple ID settings and Apple's infrastructure. Local data remains on your device.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
